My newest piece: SYMPATICO NOW is a yin-yang struggle for gaining control of one’s life and psyche. Musically, it juxtaposes an almost tongue-in-cheek melodramatic score-like motif (the yang) with a more uplifting Asian folk melody (the yin) as the inner struggle unfolds. It evolves gradually from psychosis to confusion to health and well-being. Uncommon Western-style harmonies are added to the Asian “pentatonic” melody, to further fuse—and confuse—the matter.
The accompanying music video depicts the internal struggles of a young woman dealing with something, perhaps psychosis, drug addiction, or complete alienation from society. The push and pull between health and ill health, and the quest for a solution is the plot. There does seem to be a happy ending.
